Sagrantino – Unique Grape of Montefalco, Umbria

The Vendemmia is upon us!! We are very fortunate to live right smack bang in the middle of the Sagrantino area in and around Montefalco. Wine-lovers who take a Gusto Wine Tour  at this time of year (September/October) are often lucky enough to see part of the vendemmia  (grape harvest). Sometimes, they might even be able to pick a bunch of grapes or two! When do you get to see Sagrantino being harvested? The Sagrantino grape is one of the last of the grapes to be harvested, usually around the middle of October. The bunches are carefully picked by hand, and brought...

The Last Sunday of May – Cantine Aperte.

Originally Posted  by Gusto Wine Tours on May 22, 2011 Thought I’d quickly update this blog post from 2011! We originally thought when we first started Gusto Wine Tours that this would be the busiest day of the year – Cantine Aperte (Open Wineries).  We were also under the impression that only Umbria did this open day. We were wrong on both counts.  The world and his wife descend on the cantine on this day making it nigh on impossible to contemplate organising an intimate personal wine tour!  We now know, of course that this special day is for every...

Cantine Aperte – Last Sunday in May – Ground Rules.

Party Time in The Umbrian Wineries! Cantine Aperte Umbrian Views   The nationwide Cantine Aperte (Open Cellars) in Italy is always the last weekend of May. This is one of the few days in the year we DON’T work!  We use part of the day to go to new cantine that we normally don’t have time to visit in Umbria. The latter part we go local – so we can get home easily! So, if you’ve never been, how do you go about it?  I’m here to tell you how!  You have a few months to book your holiday in Umbria! This is an...

Looking back, to look forward …. Our Loves and Life in Umbria.

Sometimes all it takes is to flick through past photographs to relive the laughs, the memories, the friendships …… I took a peek at just the past few months .. Here’s what I came up with …..   There were, of course so many more photos I could have included, but perhaps there should be a part 2 instead!   Finally, if you have got this far – if you like our photos, please don’t steal them – if you ask me, I’ll in all likelihood say yes as long as you credit me for it!  😀

Another Typically Non-Typical Gusto Wine Tours Day!

We get enquiries sometimes that cause us to do a double-take! This year we had a request from a very nice man from the States asking if we could organise a special event for him & his fiancé while they were on a wine tour with us. He wanted to surprise her with a little chapel blessing in honour of their forthcoming wedding in a small, out the way place, preferably with a view…..  Could we rise to the occasion? At first we didn’t think it would be possible – this is Italy, after all, the home of the beloved...

A Gusto Day … Typically Untypical!

We are asked all the time “What can we expect from a day out with Gusto?” We don’t like to give too much away as part of the pleasure, we have found, is in discovering those particular pleasures along the way! So, why don’t I tell you about a day that happened last year? The summer was a hot and long one – one to remember!  The sunflowers seemed to go on and on – my favourite flower!   We had requests from 3 different young couples coming from 3 different directions … so it was that we organised a...

New Occasional Feature – The Wineries (we know) of Umbria…..

I wrote this back in 2010, but I’d like to include it here and say that this is the start of our local Umbrian Cantina features! We need to introduce everyone to the delights of Cantina Tabarrini, they are, to our minds and taste, one of the best, most innovative,  local producers Umbria has to offer. The wine-maker is the owner – Giampaolo, he, together with his wife Federica form a formidable team.  A lot of the cantine (wineries)  stick with traditional methods, and don’t get me wrong,  make the most fabulous wines – however,  Giampaolo breaks with tradition and innovates,...
