We’d like you to meet Roberto Dionigi from Cantina Dionigi near Bevagna, Umbria.
The family Dionigi have been in the wine & olive oil making business since 1896. The care, passion and attention to detail have carried on through the generations.
Cantina Dionigi was one of the very first wineries we visited when we moved to Umbria and years later, we continue to love our many visits there!
There’s something about the combination of the soil, the micro-climate, the elevation, and, of course, the skills of Roberto that produce a stable of incredibly robust wines.
A wine tasting at Dionigi is not for the faint-hearted! Even the 100% Merlot – Gabrino – regularly tops 16% alcohol! Surprisingly, it doesn’t taste as strong as it really is! Even the crisp dry white wines surprise you with an alcohol content more often seen in dessert wines!
Roberto is also in for the long haul with a fairly new project – balsamic vinegar production. There are many more years until we see the results, but just visiting the vinegar barrel room is fascinating!
Cantina Dionigi has a special place in our hearts – it was one of the first vineyards we discovered when we first arrived in Cannara and we were exploring the area – We met the whole family that first day – curious to meet these ‘stranieri‘ (foreigners) who’d just moved to the area!
