Bevagna – Il Mercato delle Gaite.
A little snapshot of the festival.
WE try and go every year …..
Every June Bevagna, in central Umbria holds a 10 day medieval festa – the whole town gets involved and dresses up as medieval folk. They dress the town up too, hiding modern day paraphernalia with hessian sacking where possible!
The various quarters of the town compete during this time to ultimately win for their little area – each quarter has a taverna where the cooks roll up their sleeves to impress the judges for their best medieval dish!
A medieval market with goods and services from that time is held along with a ‘zoo’ showing animals that would have been common in medieval times.
Little workshops open all over the town showing craftsmen at work, candlemakers, apothecaries, spinners, wine-makers, blacksmiths, glass-blowers, paper-makers, weavers, yarn dyers and many more – you can watch them at work.
Go and grab a dinner, specially made for the festival, it’s a real treat!
We went on Sunday lunchtime and didn’t go to the little workshops this year, but here are a few other photos to tempt you into going next year!
